I talked with the 800# today.... the second shipment went out on 11/21/01. It was shipped various ways; e.g. UPS, priority mail etc. If you were registered by your dealer, after the 1st. shipment went out in July & August, you will receive the 1st. shipment in this mailing. I asked why they did not send shipments 1 & 2 in this last mailing, and they politely replied "that they just did not do it that way". The lady I spoke with was very nice and she reassured me that if you still get registered by your dealer by the end of November 2001, you will still receive the entire collection.

If you call the 800#,(1-800-831-8317) they can look up your name under your dealer's code or either by your name & zip.. they can probably tell you which address the mailings will go to. Hope this is of some help! Happy Holidays

Received my pkg. from the Thunderbird Collection on Friday 11/30/01. It arrived UPS marked "fragile". Although this was the second of 5 or 6 mailings, I received the 1st. mailings items due to the timing of me being registered by my dealer. As I stated in a earlier post, you will still receive all of the mailings if your dealer has you registered by 11/30/01. However, I was told today that the deadline for registration was extended until 12/31/01.

While waiting at the dealership yesterday to pick up my Thunderbird, my salesman, without even asking me, registered me for the Thunderbird Collection...what a pleasant shock, since I had heard that at a lot of dealerships it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to do this for you. He also gave me a copy of the "hardback coffee table" version book of the Thunderbird, since they were probably just going to throw it away.

Every time i call the tBird collection 800#, i get a different story. Appears to be a totally mismanaged operation. latest story is that the SECOND mailing, which is the yellow book and some static cling TBirds, was supposed to go out about two weeks ago. Now they are saying it will go out "sometime this week'. Who knows??? Let's let each other know when we receive this 2nd mailing.

I'm glad you're checking in on them, Joela. I remember saying over a month ago that they promised the 1st mailing in early July and it didn't get shipped out until mid August. Looks like they're doing the same with this mailing. Would be nice if we had it by Christmas but this is the worst time of the year for them to be mass mailing a package. Guess I'll expect this shipment by Mid-January.

Just received my second mailing via UPS today. Nice little stories about the car's development and team members in the yellow book. One page describes how the car with doors open looks like a thunderbird from the rear (standing about one car length behind).
The static clings are the color of your car, with views from different angles. They can be placed on a window of you house, and as you look out gives you the illusion of your car "parked" in your preferred location.
Also contains a piece of promitional literature for a limited edition watch, outside most of our price range ($4600).
Comment if Ford is listening - The outside of the collection box should be protected during shipment (just a simple sheet of paper would do the trick). The shipping box badly abraded my case, and it looks years old already.
Every trip out of the garage is a treat (1200 mi, getting close to 1st oil change)!

BornAgain - they are making 250 men's, 250 women's. I didn't see a limit on number a person can order. Suppose you can order more than one, but at $4,600 each, I doubt many will! There is an 800 number to order the signed and numbered watches.

Recieved my second mailing recently, also. I have enjoyed looking at the book, but did find a factual error. In the discussion about "********s", the writer claims that the ******** first appeared in 1957. No so - I purchased my '56 in May of 1956 and it had ********s in the hardtop. The hardtop with the ******** was an option in '56. I don't think any '55s had that option, but I am not sure.

12-13-2001, 06:25 PM
The "********" issue is one that I confronted with Mr. Gill Baumgartner, authenticity chairman, of the Classic Thunderbird Club (CTCI) back at a regional car show in '91.
My '56 was produced January 6,1956 and has the original top without "********s".
I asked Gill how come most'56 Birds had "********s". He said the factory started cuting and installing them in ALL tops in April of 1956 and anyone who purchased their car before that date could get a dealer to cut and install them at no cost.
So over half of the '56s did not have factory "********s" as they were an aftermarket option, but all of the '57s had them.
So the yellow book is half-correct in the fact that only '57s ALL had "********s" but BotNew56 is correct in that his and all produced after his had "********s" and '56 was the first model year for them.
The '56 without "********s" seems more rare now, as most opted to have them installed.

I do seem to recall that some of the 56's did not have ********s. However, the yellow book claims that the ******** first "appeared" in 1957, and although it is just semantics, it seems to be misleading, perhaps flirting with wrong. http://www.fordthunderbirdforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

Correction on the 57 - both tops were available - with or without ********s. The 57's without ********s have a Thunderbird emblem in a circle that matches the steering wheel emblem of the 57.
Yes, many people had their tops converted to the ******** top - gave a little better sight in the blind spots with the hardtop on.
People still convert old non-******** tops to the ******** top including Ford - They did that to the 3 '55's they used on the Dream Tour last year.

I just received my third mailing via UPS at noon today. It is actually book #5, a journal with pictures (art as they describe them) and places for your input and personal photos.
The cover letter starts with "The wait is over. Your new Thunderbird has arrived." Later it says "If you haven't received every mailing - sit tight. You've got a few more surprises coming your way." It appears that they intend to send this out after you get your car, regardless of where you are in the other mailings. This book was supposed to be the last of the original "Managing the Wait" collection, and the first four books should have arrived before our cars did.
It would be kind of silly for those of us with cars to wait until the end of the mailings to get this journal, meant to record our early experiences and feelings about the car. There is a return card to provide the personal information and VIN# for the nameplate for the front of the book. It says you don't have to use your actual name, but can use nicknames, etc. So you can begin thinking about what you want to select. You are limited to two lines, 25 characters (including spaces and punctuations) on each line.
BTW - I also received the Thunderbird hat I ordered from Ford in November as well.

Those who have received the 3rd (5th) mailing. What is your take on the picture in the back pocket? I say they took a picture of each color and just sent the applicable color to each customer. I have a picture of a black one rolling off the assembly line, but it doesn't seem to have the chrome bezel on the hood scoop. It would just have been too hard to take a picture of everyone's car as it was rolling off I'm sure.
DavidA
01-11-2002, 01:19 PM
NMJeff: Unless your's is a Neiman-Marcus car, the chrome bezel is an after market item. None of the "regular" cars come off the line with the chrome hood scoop bexel.
Birdbrain

NMJeff - That is definitely a generic canned picture. The cars are covered with the protective white plastic film when they actually come off the line. But it is a nice touch nonetheless.

If you look carefully at the black gift boxes, you will see an assembly diagram on each box with it's place in the total assembly highlighted. The first box with the bookends was assemlby #1 and the box with the ledger is actually box number 5. My guess is that it was originally timed to be the last one sent in the manage the wait program that got cancelled and now they are sending it out several months after you receive your car. I knew this would get confusing so let's see if I can clarify some of it.
1 - #1 & #2 have been delivered to those that signed up by July (1st group)
2 - #1 has been delivered to those that signed up by the end of Sept/Oct (don't know cutoff date for sure)(2nd group)
3 - #5 is being delivered NOW to those who have received their cars judging by the posts above.
4 - #3 (or #2, or #1 depending on when it was ordered for you) will be the next delivered to those who don't have cars yet. When? we had assumed in March, maybe even April but with the new mailings of #5, maybe #3 will come out sooner?? Is that clear as mud?
another question we can't answer - Will those receiving #5 now, receive #3 when 1st group (no cars yet) receives them? I would hope so but only time will tell on that.
This is the LIST of mailings.
Mailing#1 Red covered book with pictures brushed aluminum tbird bookends complete with opera windows.

"Mechanical Engineer"
"William R Green"
nothing great, but it is mine.
The dealer gets a good laugh each time I tell him that he signed the letter that comes with the boxes.

Just got the inside scoop that the next official mailing(s) of the Thunderbird collection will be in full swing by the 8th. of February 2002. A very low number of people, that have recently received a mailing over the last 2 wks has been reported on previous posts. The official, next "mass mailing" will commence on or about 02/08/02. Check those mailboxes!!!!
#7 of 13, blue/blue/premium, w.optional performance white top. No vin yet, however, dealer tells me we are close. He has received 4 cars. His 5th. is due in two weeks. Hopefully, I will have a vin by the end of Jan. to mid Feb. and the car will be here in mid to late March. Can't wait!!

VABIRD, the mailing that a few of us have gotten over the last few weeks has been mailing #5, which we have gotten out of order because we've already received our cars.
I imagine the mass mailing in February will be mailing #3.

You are correct. The next"mass mailing" will be #3 of the original sequence. However, it will be the 1st. and 2nd. mailings for alot of people that ordered their birds late. This mailing will be the 2nd. in the collection for me.
# 7 0f 13, blue/blue/premium w opt. Performance White top.

I understand that the next mailing of the Thunderbird Collection is going out tomorrow 2/07/02. This will be mailing # 2, 3, 4, or 5 for some people, depending when they registered thru the dealer. This will be my 2nd. Keep your eyes on your mailboxes, UPS, Fed-Ex, etc.
# 7 of 13, dealer tells me I am 9 of 13 now. Their stock units vs sold orders has the consumer confused where they thought they were in the allocation !! I am counting cars as they have come into the dealership, which has been 4 with # 5 eta of 3/04/02. My math tells me that I am two cars down the line after #5. My dealer tells me I am 4 cars away after #5. I must remember that stock units which are two(2) so far, have put me back in their allocation. Sorry if this sounds confusing, I am still reeling from my discussions with the dealer today. The bottom line as I see it now.... rather than getting my car mid to late March, he tells me that it may be mid May early June. This "manage the wait" program is really becoming unbearable.
P.S. I still have no vin # yet !!!
thenewtbird2
02-06-2002, 11:55 PM
Don't think anybody will be getting #4 on this next mailing, #3 is the next one in line for those who started getting these from the very first mailing.
I agree with you va - why a dealer is putting stock units ahead of sold orders is beyond me - just makes those of us waiting more agitated. However, if he ordered those without hardtops then I can understand them coming in now and pushing the other orders out of line since Ford is trying to do a sell job on the cars without hardtops. There is more going on behind the scenes than we will ever know and somehow we're getting lost in the shuffle.
My agitation is that my dealer has only received 7 VINs so far with 19 more to go. Don't know how he can possibly be in the 40% delivered by the end of February.

“My agitation is that my dealer has only received 7 VINs so far with 19 more to go. Don't know how he can possibly be in the 40% delivered by the end of February.”
A rough estimation of how to calculate what you VIN number will be or when your car will be built is as follows.
My Situation
My dealer was to receive a total of 7 cars
Ford is making 25,000 cars
Percentage my dealer is receiving of the total production 7 / 25,000 = .00028
My car was # 3 of 7 therefore is you divide 3 by .00028 you would get an estimation of which one of the 25,000 would be your car.
Mine would be 3 / .00028 = 10,714 my actual VIN is 10,687 which is close to the calculation.
My dealer has received 42% of the VINs for his total allocation.
NuttyGambler
02-07-2002, 08:52 AM
Another example of a dealer who could care less.
It is easy for a dealer to put his stock units ahead of his sold units but just changing his priority number on the cars.
He is just trying to get the stock units in as quickly as possible to be able to sell them for over MRSP before there are two many out there.
Also you estimate of time: it needs to consider that all the dealers who only are getting one have now gotten them. I would start counting time after the date when that happened. (didn't follow but mid December?) Deducting the total dealers (3800?) from the 25,000.

No such luck - you're out of the running for getting the collection. Orders had to be placed last year by the dealer - with customer addresses. But you're in good luck getting the metal covered book.
Watch ebay - occasionally a part of the Thunderbird collection will show up.

I don’t want to here that. I had ordered my bird on Jan 13 01. Being 2 of 2, it is still on order for the dealer. After seeing all the cars sitting on dealer lots unsold, I found one like I had ordered and bought it for less than my local dealer was going to charge me.
Even though I was able to do the mystery drive last fall, I have not seen any of the collection. I know from talking to my local dealer and seeing all the info on this site, the sales people are really uniformed. But my selling dealer did tell me that we would all get the collection.
I am just upset with Ford on how they handled the distribution. I have always felt that we who had ordered a car and put a down payment on it, should have gotten the cars before the dealers out the who are adding outrages amounts to the price of the car. Oh well, I love the car and I am glad I did what I did. Just not happy with the system I guess.

Howlee, If your 1st dealer had ordered the collection, you would have started receiving the Thunderbird Collection last August. Since you haven't received anything, sounds more like that dealership was confused about the Collection program and the Manage the Wait program http://www.fordthunderbirdforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

But always got the same answer, Oh yes your name is in the system. What the heck, i have the car, and another dealer got the $$. when it's time to order our 03 explorer, I again will find it over the internet (like my bird). i would have just gone down and had them order it for me. I just received book #3 via UPS about 15 minutes ago. It contains the usual cover letter from the dealer, as well as a turquoise-blue suede-looking book.
It is described as "an interactive book all about numbers", and most of the pages have fold-outs. For instance, it says "3.47 square yards", you fold it out and see a sample of the leather in a picture of a car interior. It shows a full blue accent, and sample of blue leather. I don't know if the book will have your interior color, or if they will all be blue. It has a page which says "47 year love affair" with picture comparisons of styling cues for our car vs the early birds. Another page says there are at least 12 sets of wings on the car, and challenges us to find as many as we can.
There is more, and an interesting "last page" that I won't spoil for those who haven't gotten the book. It's a fun book, I thought. I can't help but wish the "Manage the Wait" program had worked out, the mailings certianly would have built-up the excitement! It was a great idea, if they had "pulled it off" as originally planned. Now they are simply additional collectibles.
I seem to be the first one to receive these, so you can probably estimate when your's will arrive based on the timing of your delay on the last mailing.
Have fun

I have had posts which describe the poor quality or service of some aftermarket accessories, but these items from FORD are another exception to the minor problems that affect some branches of FORD.
Some time ago the price for this program was stated to be around $50, I think we are getting a great return for what the dealerships paid on our behalf.

Based on what we have seen here and what we have been told, it is totally NOT TRUE that you don't receive the Thunderbird collection gifts once you have received the car. As a matter of fact, the black book, a journal for you to write your experiences with the car, has been sent to those people who have their car already. There are five mailings and we are all supposed to get all five. If your dealer won't help you, get ahold of your Ford zone or regional manager. It is amazing how some sales people just blow their customers off with crap, instead of doing a little bit of work.

Unlike most of you that are in on the mailings, I had to wait a few more weeks because of our trip before getting to look at collection #3. I was really puzzled about what that last page was since it was mentioned all the time - neat - but was more impressed that the book is covered with blue suede - color of my car! http://www.fordthunderbirdforum.com/ubb/smile.gif
Anyway, have now updated my memorabilia (http://www.geocities.com/***********/newbirdmems.html) page with photo links of Collection #3 & collection #5 (got to see hobobob's #5 set since he's had his car since last October).
Since #3 came in February, I'm speculating that set #4 will arrive in late May or early June - hopefully about the time our car will arrive???? Set #4 will have the model in it and from past experience with model deliveries that could be a delay factor http://www.fordthunderbirdforum.com/ubb/wink.gif!

Dot,
I noticed in your list of the collection on the memorabilia page, for book #3 you say "includes sample of your car's leather". I have a black car and the leather sample is blue. Did all the books come with a blue leather sample?
Also, I have had my car since 9/28/01 and still have not received book #5.

Rtbrd,
You must be correct about the sample leather in the book if yours was blue, too. I just assumed that they paid attention to that detail since they have on the other sets in the collection - oh! well! - guess everyone getting the collection gets to know what the Thunderbird blue leather looks like!
I would wonder, too, about why you haven't received the #5 set yet. Bet they don't have that "owner has received car" system down pat. Might be something for your dealer to try to track down as to "why??"

Believe it or not, I just recieved the first mailing yesterday, March 18th. I almost forgot about the Tbtird Collection since I didn't think me dealer signed me up. I guess thats what I get for ordering late, 05/30/01 and being 42 of 52. I'm getting excited again!

Just got my bookends and a note from my dealer in Box 1. Considering I got my car last August and am approaching 8,000 miles, timing couldn't be better.

Dot, I have sets 1, 2, & 3 also but have not received set 5 as of yet and took delivery of the vehicle on 10-9-01. I've been looking for it since people started talking about it around 2 months ago.

Here's something interesting...I just received my box #5 last Friday. I took delivery of my car on February 7, but the letter inside is still being signed by the sales manager of the original dealership that I initially ordered my car from locally. If you remember, I wound up having to go 350 miles North to get my car. I've spoken with the people at the Thunderbird Collection, and they said that they've corrected the info, but I still keep getting shipments signed by the old dealership. So now I have #1, #2 and #5.

Only Ford could think any part of this program makes sense. I got mailing #1 one day last week and #5 the next day (enrolled in November after getting the car). Why they don't just get everyone caught up to same point is bewildering. Looks like it would be easier to keep track of that way.
Of course that is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I just got my 1st mailing last week. I figured my dealer had lied to me about enrolling me but when I told him I finally got the 1st installment he had no kind words for those running the "Collection" program. Can't say as I blame him.

I took delivery of my Red Bird on 2-8. Received box 1 on Friday 3-15 and box 5 on Saturday 3-16. Too bad UPS couldn't deliver both on same trip and save some gas.
