1955 T bird changes/exhaust rear back up light?

I was told that during the manufacturing of the first T birds that they did not originally have the rear back up lights with lens above the tail lights but a chrome plate, and that the rear exhaust was not mounted through the openings on the rear bumper but underneath the vehicle. Can anyone tell me if this is true or not. All pictures I see are with back up lights and exhausts through the rear bumper. I was lead to believe this was on the very first ones manufactured.
