I joined this group in June or July and I at that time I read if I contributed $25.00 I would be a charter member and not subject to an annual fee. I did this and now I have received an email that I will be subject to an annual fee. Did I read this incorrectly?

Additionally today I received an email that I need to send an email or be dropped from membership. I haven't emailed but would appreciate not being dropped.

That has nothing to do with your membership, they are seperate areas of the site. Users who have no posted are being purged. You have now posted, so it is not applicable to you.
